Turmeric Tales: Disciple "GOOD SKIN" Facial Oil-Serum

I was meant to finish writing up my Kiehls Turmeric & Cranberry mask draft and post it next in my Turmeric Tales series (read my first post describing Turmeric benefits here), but life has massively got in the way of blogging as consistently as I intended for this year and recently I’ve been using this Disciple Good Skin facial oil-serum (due to my skin reacting to something), so I felt it deserved to be bumped up the Turmeric Tale list as I haven't been using much else (in a bid to make my skin return to normal).
I haven’t yet tried the Dreamy Skin facial oil in this Discovery Set that I bought, so I am focusing this blog post on the Good Skin Facial Oil-Serum, but the Dreamy Skin sounds amazing and I always look for sets when purchasing new products from brands, so I’d recommend buying this one to see if you like both, as it works out better value for money.
Read on to see what my thoughts are on the Good Skin facial oil-serum and why it may be good for you too..

S K I N    U P D A T E

First of all, a bit of an update on my skin at the moment:
For the last couple months my skin feels like it’s been at its worst it’s ever been; there have been small spots, mostly around my jaw or chin, which indicates it’s hormonal or diet related but I get the same small spots occasionally on my forehead too which could mean stress too. They’re not massive, but they sometimes are whiteheads or small red ones and just generally annoying as I’ve had mostly clear skin my whole life aside from the occasional spot.
Whether it’s due to stress, hormones, diet or something else, I’ve tried to eliminate/change the things that could be affecting it (pillow, drinking more water etc), I've used my usual spot treatments that work (Glamglow Supermud, La Roche Posay Effaclar Duo, The Ordinary Niacinamide), but to no avail.
I just constantly feel like I need to shed my skin and have a new one replace it, which bothers me a bit and puts me off doing makeup looks too (which I've always enjoyed!), but it isn’t a huge deal in the grand scheme of things and hopefully will not last forever.

About two weeks ago my skin also reacted to something and I have a feeling it could be a new skincare product more than anything I ate, as it was just on my face. I reacted with bumpy/sensitive skin all over, including my eyes and not anywhere else on my body.
It was most sore around my under eye area, which was a bummer as I wear a concealer most frequently out of all makeup items - I am super conscious of my dark circles!
Thankfully I donned my sunglasses for the school runs, to help my skin restore itself without adding any chemicals/makeup.
But on the days I’ve had events in this time, my skin under my eyes stung a bit wearing concealer and overall the bumpiness all over my face and eyes was even more visible with makeup on top of it.
So I stripped back on my use of skincare products and went as back to basics as possible:
I used my son’s eczema-prescribed Diprobase lotion as a cleanser, as I felt like it would be less harsh or sting as much as any other cleansers I have. I only used rosewater as a toner if I felt my skin needed it and used Aveeno Dermexa as my moisturiser because it’s fragrance free and also didn’t sting.
I must add that I am now an Aveeno Ambassador in case you’re not following me on Instagram, so it’s been amazing learning about the science of the skin and very helpful for moments like this.

By day 6 I felt like my skin was a little less sting-y so I looked through my skincare drawer and saw the Disciple discovery set I bought from Cult Beauty for this Turmeric Tales series and wondered if I could use it on my face without stinging.

I ended up having a meeting with the PR who handle Disciple in the time of my reacted skin period and it sounded like it was perfect for it as Disciple is made for inflammatory skin conditions including eczema and adult acne.

I've taken the info below from the Disciple website in case you're into understanding the science of a brand's skincare like I am!
Disciple products are made with:
  • ADAPTOGENSpotent plant extracts (like Turmeric!) that balance, restore and protect the body. Disciple use botanical adaptogens that greatly improve your body's ability to adapt to stress and help to rebalance hormones.
  • PREBIOTICS: food for the good bacteria. I recently learned with Aveeno that just like our gut, our skin has a unique flora/microbiome - aka home to microorganisms like bacteria - which we have “good” and “bad” versions of. Propionibacterium acnes is bad bacteria that causes breakouts. Disciple use inulin rich burdock root - a plant fibre that is a prebiotic (food for the good bacteria) on the surface of the skin, helping to reduce inflammation and fight breakouts.
  • LINOLEIC ACID: an omega 6 fatty acid. Breakout sufferers have been shown to have low levels of Linoleic acid in their skin surface lipids. When our skin is deficient in Linoleic acid our skins' natural sebum becomes thick, sticky and clogs pores - that's why some skin oils can cause breakouts: not all oils are created equally. All Disciple oils are high in Linoleic acid which helps to balance the skins natural sebum consistency.
  • Their products are hand-blended in small batches; the best way to ensure fresh and potent skincare. They use botanical raw ingredients that are not harmful, are transparent with their labelling and all of their products have been clinically safety tested.

Good Skin is a 100% active botanical face oil. It's formulated with break-out-prone skin in mind, an is rich in essential fatty acids, hormone balancing essential oils and bad bacteria fighting prebiotics.
"GOOD SKIN clears, brightens and nourishes tricky skin.”

100% Natural

Ingredients: Vitis Vinifera (Grapeseed Oil), Curcuma longa (Turmeric oil)*, Rosmarinus Officinalis Leaf Oil (Rosemary), Pelargonium Graveolens Flower Oil (Geranium)*, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender oil), Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree oil), Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha Oil), Burdock Root Extract**, Olive Oil - Organic Extra Virgin <0.5%

*Adaptogens ** Prebiotics

Turmeric Oil: helps to speed up the healing process and take out redness.
Geranium oil: antibacterial - works to balance rogue hormones naturally.
Burdock Root: a prebiotic (food for probiotic bacteria) - gives the good bacteria on the skins surface a boost, helping to fight break-out causing bacteria and sooth inflammation.

Smells like an essential oil, calming.

Gently massage 3-5 drops into cleansed skin every morning or night, patting around the orbital area. I use my White Lotus Quartz roller and gently massage around my orbital area with the smaller end.
Disciple recommend wearing SPF (which we should be doing anyway by now) as there are regenerative properties in the ingredients.

What I think is special about this oil-serum is that it’s good for both dry/eczema skin (based on reviews) and also acne skin.
I’ve always thought acne and eczema skin were on opposite ends of the spectrum, but my skin reaction recently FELT dry/sensitive like eczema skin but I still had small red/whiteheads too which I thought was an odd combination.
Either way, my skin is happy with this oil-serum so far and I'm hoping with continued use it does miraculously help my skin.
I thought I’d share this little gem as it sounds perfect for everyone who is stressed too (which I imagine most of us are at some point of life).

You can buy the Discovery Set with Good Skin + Dreamy Skin for £17 here or full size for £23 here.

masks are essential for beautiful looks and most women and even men go for chemical peels to have that flawless skin. However, the facial treatments that you choose can highly determine the results that you get. Masks that are made of harsh chemicals can be damaging to the skin and it is therefore very important that you choose a mask that you are sure has ingredients that will not irritate or damage your skin.
